Google Business Profile for a Wigan trades firm

A firm with a van on the road usually gets more from the profile than from the website. This note is the setup order that matters and the fields nearly everyone leaves empty.

The A-side

Why the profile wins

Why the profile outranks the website for a trade

When Google reads a query as local it stops showing a plain list of pages and puts a map with three businesses above everything else. On a phone those three take up most of the first screen.

A boiler that has stopped working in February is a phone decision made in under a minute. The caller is not comparing five websites. They are tapping the first plausible name in the map block.

That is why the profile is the highest value surface for most Wigan trades. The website still matters because the profile points at it. The profile is simply what gets seen first.

Three things decide the map block, roughly in this order: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is fixed. All of the available work sits in the other two.

The B-side

Setup, in order

The setup order for a borough sized service area

Primary category
One accurate primary category decides which searches you are eligible for at all. A gas engineer listed under a general contractor category quietly disappears from boiler searches, and this is the field most often set wrong.
Secondary categories
Add only the ones you genuinely trade in. A long list of loosely related categories weakens the primary signal rather than widening reach.
Service areas
Wigan, Leigh, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Standish, Hindley, Orrell, Golborne, Ince, Aspull and Shevington cover most van radiuses in the borough. Add Atherton and Tyldesley if you actually travel that far east.
Services
Every job type entered separately with a written description. Boiler replacement, boiler repair, landlord safety certificate and radiator installation are four services and not one.
Photographs
Real work on real properties, added as you go. A terrace in Ince and a new build in Standish look different, and photographs of both tell a customer you work on their kind of house.
Landing pages
Each service should point at a page about that service rather than at the homepage. This link between the profile and the site is the single most commonly missing piece.

The distance problem across Wigan borough

Wigan borough is wide. A firm in Standish and a firm in Leigh are both legitimately Wigan businesses and they are a long way apart in map terms.

That geography sets your realistic target list. A base near the town centre competes well for Wigan searches and less well for Tyldesley ones. A base in Golborne has the opposite shape.

The honest response is to accept the map for what it is and win the searches you are eligible for. A firm that is close enough to appear and loses on a vague category or an empty services list is giving away work for free.

Service area pages on the website do part of the rest. A page about boiler repair in Leigh gives the organic results something to rank even where the map block is out of reach, provided the page is genuinely about Leigh rather than a copy with the town name swapped.

The fields most Wigan profiles leave empty

FieldUsual stateWhat filling it does
ServicesBlank or one entryAdds a written statement per job type and widens query eligibility.
Business descriptionGeneric or missingGives a plain summary that both Google and AI assistants can quote.
Opening hoursWrong or never updatedRemoves the wasted calls and the reviews that complain about them.
AttributesUntouchedSurfaces filters such as on site estimates and appointment booking.
PhotosStock or two years oldShows current work and gives a customer something to recognise.
Questions and answersEmptyLets you answer the objection everybody raises before they ring.

None of that costs money. All of it costs an evening and most Wigan trades profiles have never had that evening spent on them.

Where the profile now feeds something else

The same profile data is increasingly what AI assistants read when a customer asks for a recommendation rather than searching. A consistent name, category and service list now pays into two systems at once.

That is the argument for doing this properly now rather than treating the profile as an afterthought. The local SEO page covers the map pack side in more depth.

Common questions

I work from home in Hindley. Do I have to publish my address?

No. Set the profile up as a service area business and hide the address because that is exactly what the setting is for. Publishing a home address you do not trade from creates a mismatch that hurts more than an empty address field does.

How many service areas should a Wigan trades firm list?

List the places you genuinely travel to and stop there. Adding Manchester and Preston to reach a bigger population dilutes the signal and produces enquiries you have to turn down anyway.

Can I rank in Wigan town centre from a base in Leigh?

Partly. Distance is a real ranking factor that cannot be bought around so a firm based in the town centre holds a structural advantage there. The winnable ground is the searches you are already close enough for and are losing on relevance.

Do the Services and Products fields actually do anything?

They do and most Wigan profiles leave them blank. Each job type entered with a real description gives Google another statement about what you do. An empty field gives it nothing.

How do I get reviews without breaking Google's rules?

Ask every completed customer at the point the job finishes and give them a direct link. Never offer anything in exchange and never screen who you ask by how happy they look.

If you would rather not do it yourself

The profile work sits inside the monthly retainer and there is no separate local package. Splitting it out would mean doing half a job.
