Local search or Facebook groups for Wigan trades
Community groups covering Wigan, Leigh, Standish and Ashton are a real source of work and plenty of firms are built on them. This note is about what they cannot do.
The A-side
What the groups do well
What a community group genuinely delivers
A recommendation thread is a trust shortcut. Somebody asks for a plasterer and the same firm gets named by four neighbours. That is a faster decision than any advert produces.
The cost is zero and the audience is exactly local. For a firm starting out in Hindley or Golborne this is the fastest route to a first fortnight of work.
Groups also carry a signal that search cannot manufacture. A named person vouching in public is stronger evidence than a star rating. Buyers have no trouble telling the difference.
None of that is worth giving up. The argument here is not against the groups. It is about what happens when they are the only channel.
The B-side
The structural limits
Four things a group cannot do
- It does not compound
- A thread is buried within a day and the next request starts from nothing. A page that ranks keeps producing enquiries for months without further effort.
- It is not searchable in any useful way
- Somebody looking for a roofer at eleven at night does not scroll a group. They search, and a group post is close to unreachable from a search engine.
- It is invisible to AI assistants
- Assistants build answers from pages they can crawl and parse. A comment inside a closed group is not one of those, so a firm with a strong group reputation can still be a firm no assistant has ever heard of.
- You do not own it
- Group rules change, admins change and platform reach changes. A channel you cannot control is a channel that can be switched off without warning.
The last one is the argument that carries most weight over five years. Everything on a platform you rent is temporary and everything on a site you own is not.
The two channels answer different questions
| Buyer situation | Where they go | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler out this morning | Search and the map block | The need is immediate and the phone is already in hand. |
| Wants a name they can trust | Community group | Neighbours vouching in public settles it faster than reviews. |
| Planning a full rewire | Search, then the website | Larger spend means comparing firms and reading before ringing. |
| Landlord sourcing a regular | Search and directories | They need certification and insurance stated in writing. |
| Asked an assistant for a shortlist | AI answer, then a call | The assistant names two or three firms and the rest never appear. |
A firm that only works the groups is present for one of those five rows. That is a real business and it is a smaller one than it needs to be.
How the two feed each other
Group activity gives search something it can use. That something is people typing your firm's name into Google afterwards. A branded search is the cleanest demand signal there is and it only exists once somebody has heard of you.
The reverse also holds. A proper website gives the person recommending you something to link to. The link is what turns a name in a comment into a click.
So the two are not rivals. The group creates the awareness and the site and profile catch it. A firm that has only one half of that pair leaks most of what it earns.
A workable split for a small Wigan firm
Keep answering the group threads because the habit is already paying and it takes minutes. Add one hour a week to the Google Business Profile and to the pages on your own site.
Track which enquiries came from where for a month by simply asking every caller. That single question tells you more about your own marketing than any dashboard will.
Common questions
Should a Wigan trades firm leave the community groups alone?
No. The groups are a genuine source of work and they cost nothing but time. The mistake is treating them as the whole plan rather than as one of two channels.
Why do group recommendations not help my Google position?
A recommendation inside a group is difficult for a search engine to reach and it disappears down the feed within a day. The value lands as a phone call rather than as anything a ranking system can count.
Do the groups help with AI assistants at all?
Rarely and indirectly. Assistants are limited to pages they can reach and parse. A comment thread inside a closed group is close to invisible to them.
What kind of jobs come from each channel?
Groups tend to produce urgent and smaller work from people who want reassurance today. Search tends to produce planned and larger work from people comparing two or three firms before they commit.
How much time should go to each one?
Keep the group habit because it is already working and it is free. Put the paid effort into the profile and the site because that half is the one that compounds.
The half you own
The profile and the site are the parts nobody can take away from you. The local SEO page covers how that half is built.
